Running for a Cause: My NT City2Surf Journey to Raise $5,000 for NICU

Sometimes, the reasons to take on a challenge are crystal clear, and for me, that moment came when I decided to run the NT City2Surf. It wasn’t just about hitting a personal goal or setting a new record—it was about something bigger than me, something that has been deeply personal and profoundly meaningful: raising funds for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Earlier this year, I couldn’t think of a single reason not to run for NICU.  My family has a very special connection to NICU, especially with the birth of my daughter, Eloise, who was born prematurely at 25 weeks and spent 128 days in the NICU at Royal Darwin Hospital. Watching Eloise grow stronger every day after such a difficult start to life gave me an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the care she received and the life-saving technology available to families facing similar challenges.

**The Fundraising Goal: $5,000 for NICU**

With this in mind, I committed to raising $5,000 for Running for Premature Babies; a charity started by Sophie after the early arrival of her three boys. Every step I take during my training and on race day will be a reminder of just how much those medical professionals and resources meant to my family. It’s more than just a number—it’s about making sure that other families in the NICU receive the same kind of support and care that we did.

This year, I had already set a goal to run 10 kilometres, and the NT City2Surf presented the perfect opportunity to merge my personal aspirations with this cause. The race itself, at 12.5 kilometres, will be a challenge, especially in the Darwin heat.  Not only will I be working towards my fitness goal, but I’ll also be carrying with me the hopes and support of every person who has donated to my cause.

**Why Run?**

Why choose running as the way to raise funds? It’s simple: running is something I can do, and it’s a way to push myself to keep moving forward. The dedication and perseverance it takes to train for a race mirrors the strength and determination I’ve witnessed in NICU families. Just as they push through some of life’s hardest moments, I’m determined to push myself through the training and the race itself.

As I lace up my shoes and hit the pavement, I know that every kilometre brings me closer to a better future for those in the NICU. The $5,000 I’m aiming to raise will help provide resources, equipment, and essential care to support these families during their toughest times.

**Join Me on This Journey**

I’m incredibly grateful for the support I’ve already received, having raised just over $2,200 towards my goal with six weeks until race day. Every donation, every word of encouragement, and every share of my campaign has been a reminder that I’m not in this alone. I’m carrying with me the collective strength and love of everyone who has supported this cause.

As I train and prepare for the NT City2Surf, I’ll continue to keep my focus on the bigger picture: running not just for myself, but for the future of NICU families and their little ones. I may not know all of their names, but I know that together, we can make a real difference.

If you’re able to contribute or spread the word, I’d be so grateful for your support. Let’s work together to reach this goal and make an impact where it truly matters.

Thank you for being part of this journey!

I'll run. They'll win.

Eloise Ann Brown was born at 25 weeks on January 5th, weighing 768 grams. She spent 128 days in the NICU at Royal Darwin Hospital, facing challenges with infections, breathing support, and weight gain. Despite early hurdles, including a brain bleed and heart complications, she showed incredible resilience.

Her journey was marked by gradual progress—gaining weight, moving from CPAP to high-flow oxygen, and eventually transitioning to full feeds. At 100 days old, she celebrated with nurses who decorated her cot. She continued to grow stronger, reaching milestones like moving to an open cot, breastfeeding, and reducing oxygen support.

Eloise was finally discharged the day before Mothers Day 2024. Her family celebrated as she left the hospital, marking the end of a long and emotional journey.

To honor Eloise’s journey, I'm running the NT City2Surf in June, with a fundraising goal of $5,000. The funds raised will support premature babies and their families, raising awareness for the tiniest warriors who fight the biggest battles.
