This campaign invites each person to aim to light 88 lanterns by sharing their lantern with family and friends. In Chinese culture, the number 88 symbolises good fortune, prosperity, and abundance, a meaningful goal as we come together to support premature babies.
Every lantern lit helps fund life-saving neonatal equipment, including humidicribs and ventilators, for hospitals across Australia. Together, these shared lights help give premature and critically ill babies the best possible start in life.
We are deeply grateful for every lantern lit and every act of kindness shared this Chinese New Year.
How do I complete the challenge?
When you register you will choose the distance you will complete during the month of November. Choose from 21km, 42km, 100km, 200km or 300km.
You'll also choose how you complete the distance - walk, run or roll.
It’s up to you how you divide up the distance and whether you choose one activity or more (eg, walk 90kms and run10km).
The options are endless and completely up to you. The challenge is to reach your chosen distance during November!
Will I receive a physical lantern?
Light a Lantern is a symbolic campaign. While there is no physical lantern sent, each lantern lit represents a meaningful act of care and hope for premature babies through your donation.
Can I light more than one lantern?
Why is the lantern symbolic?
Lanterns are a symbol of hope, protection, and good fortune, especially during Chinese New Year. In this campaign, the lantern represents shared wishes for strength, health, and new beginnings for premature babies and their families.
