Every lantern lit helps a baby grow stronger

This Chinese New Year, light a lantern of hope for our tiniest lives.

By making a tax-deductible donation, you can honour the season of renewal and compassion while helping to save the lives of premature babies across Australia.

Each year, more than 26,000 babies, one in every ten, are born too soon. Many must fight for survival in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs), relying on specialised, life-saving equipment and research to give them the best possible start to life. From our major cities to regional and remote communities, hospitals urgently need support to care for these vulnerable newborns.

Your Chinese New Year donation will help fund essential neonatal equipment such as humidicribs, ventilators, and resuscitation cots that can quite literally save the lives of sick and premature babies.

Lighting a lantern is a symbol of health, protection, and good fortune. This New Year, let your lantern shine for families facing their hardest moments, and help give premature babies the best possible start in life.

Thank you for sharing kindness, hope, and blessing this festive season.

Light a lantern today and help save a baby’s life.

We are proud to support Running for Premature Babies. The dedication of those who give so generously to fund vital neonatal equipment and research truly inspires us. Knowing that every dollar raised directly translates into life‑changing support for premature babies and their families is why we will each Light a Lantern this Chinese New Year and donate to help save babies’ lives.

About Running for Premature Babies

Running for Premature Babies was established in 2007 by Sophie Smith after she and her late husband Ash lost their triplet sons, Henry, Jasper and Evan, following an extremely premature birth at 24 weeks.

Since then, thousands of people have run for the cause, raising more than $12 million for life-saving neonatal equipment and research giving thousands of premature babies a better chance of survival.

The Running for Premature Babies Foundation is a registered Australian Charity supporting Neonatal Units, Special Care Nurseries and Neonatal Transfer Services around the country.

Together, we can give premature babies a better chance

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my donation tax deductible?

Yes, Running for Premature Babies Foundation is a Deductible Gift Recipient so all donations over $2 are tax deductible to Australian tax payers.

Why is my donation so important?

add remove

Many Australian hospitals do not have the neonatal equipment necessary to save a premature baby's life. Further, the pace of technological improvements means that neonatal equipment is regularly superseded by more advanced equipment. Early access to equipment and the use of advanced equipment makes the difference between a life saved and a life lost.

Our work identifies hospitals around Australia in urgent need of neonatal equipment and supplies equipment to bridge this gap.

By equipping hospitals with advanced equipment, fragile lives will be saved. Learn more here.

Why should I become a 'regular donor'?

Regular donors are our heroes. You help us to plan ahead, safe in the knowledge that your support is ongoing. You also reduce our administration costs compared to one-off donors. By becoming a regular giver, you can help us create a country where every single premature baby, wherever they are born, has the best chance of survival.

To make it 'regular' simply select Weekly, Monthly or Yearly above the donation panel. You can change your selection at any time by contacting us.

This will be one of the toughest times of your life, but celebrate the small wins. We cherished hearing that Leo was gaining weight after each weigh-in. You’ll be surrounded by a dedicated medical team, don’t hesitate to ask for help and share your story. You’re not alone; many are going through similar experiences.
Hayley
Our girls, Lena (born at 25 weeks) and Tiana (born at 29 weeks), are both thriving thanks to the incredible technology in the NICU. Without it, their lives could have been very different. Please consider donating what you can to help save other babies born too soon.

To anyone going through a NICU journey right now, feeling lost with each setback—hold on to hope. One day, you’ll look back and smile at the strength you found during those hospital days with your little one. It may feel endless in the moment, but before you know it, it will be just a memory in the blink of an eye. Much love, The Tonkins

From a mum of a 33-weeker, it’s scary, it’s overwhelming, and it can feel like your newborn experience has been taken away. But in the end, it’s all worth it. The moment you finally get to take your healthy, strong baby home is the most rewarding experience of your life. My son, Jack, is now a happy, healthy 12-month-old!
