Larapinta Trek

We did it!

10 inspirational women, 4 amazing days trekking on ancient Arrernte Aboriginal land through the Larapinta trail and ultimately achieving our goal of donating life saving equipment to Alice Springs Hospital Neonatal unit to give premature babies born in Central Australia a greater chance at survival. 

Throughout the trek I was able to reflect on what a privilege it was to be there representing the people of Weipa who have generously donated to support me to achieve this goal and especially to the family of baby Luci and those in our community impacted by preterm birth. 

I look forward to continue to support research, upholding standards of excellent clinical care and gaining sponsorship for rural and remote hospitals so that we can continue to look after our premature babies and their families as best as possible now and into the future.

International Women's Day Talk

Hi Everyone, 

Quick update, something amazing happened... I have reached the fundraising goal with the help of some amazing women!

I was incredibly thankful to be given the opportunity by the organizers of the Weipa International Women's Day Lunch to talk about Running for Premature Babies, the history of this organization and the amazing work that has been, and continues to be, done everyday by this charity. 

I was then very humbled by the Women of the Weipa community for donating so generously to this charity and sponsoring me on the Larapinta Trek. I very much appreciate it, and am so grateful to be living and working in an amazingly supportive community.

Hi everyone,

My name is Jemma and I am a GP-Obstetrician in Far North QLD. Thanks for visiting my fundraising page as I aim to raise funds for the "Running for Premature Babies" charity organisation that does important work raising awareness about preterm births, supporting research into preterm birth prevention and providing vital equipment to support preterm babies in their journey once they are born earthside.

I am passionate about preterm birth prevention and know both personally and professionally the wide range of impacts a preterm birth can have on the baby, the baby’s caregivers and the baby’s community. 

I am also passionate about rural and remote healthcare and we know that rural and remote people face many challenges including poorer health outcomes when compared with their urban counterparts. We know that preterm birth rates are higher in rural and remote areas and these higher rates are particularly apparent for First Nations mothers. 

If you’ve read this far, well done and thank you! I know there are many charities and areas of need that require support, but if you can donate even a small amount to this charity, the positive knock on effects will be realised lifelong for preterm babies, their caregivers and communities.

I'm trekking to save the lives of premature babies. Will you help?

Did you know that 26,000 babies are born prematurely in Australia each year, and many hospitals are in need of upgraded neonatal equipment to save their lives?

I’m heading to outback Australia to raise funds to support the wonderful work of Running for Premature Babies in giving these premature babies a better chance of survival, and I’d really love your support.

This charity was founded in memory of baby triplets, Henry, Jasper & Evan Smith, who were unable to overcome their prematurity when they were born in 2006. Since then over $9 million has been raised, providing 150 pieces of life-saving equipment that has directly benefitted over 10,000 babies.

Your donation will help keep me motivated on the trail, knowing that my trek is about so much more than the distance.

Any donation, no matter how big or small, will be greatly appreciated and will make a tangible difference to the lives of so many tiny babies.
