The need
One in 10 babies is born prematurely
Every year in Australia, more than 26,000 babies are born prematurely, and many of them rely on Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) to survive. Hospitals across our cities, regional towns, and remote communities urgently need our support to access the specialised, life-saving equipment required to give these babies the best possible start in life.
Our story
Transforming grief into powerful good
Running for Premature Babies was founded in 2007 by Sophie Smith OAM, after she and her late husband Ash tragically lost their triplet sons, Henry, Jasper, and Evan, who were born extremely prematurely at just 24 weeks.
Since then, thousands of runners have joined the cause, with many running for their own prematurely born children, living and lost, and raising over $11 million to fund life-saving neonatal equipment and research. To date over 20,000 sick and premature babies have directly benefitted.
Our impact
Funding life-changing care
Since 2007, we have supported thousands of premature babies and their families, raising over $12 million dollars for life-saving neonatal equipment and research.
