Every day in Australia, 71 babies are born prematurely.
This November, I'm taking part in the Premmie Marathon Challenge and running 71km to raise funds for premmie babies.
The funds raised will help support the medical equipment and research for Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) and Special Care Nurseries (SCNs) in hospitals Australia-wide, giving premature babies the support they need to grow stronger so they can go home with their families sooner.
Both Isla and Jordan, born at 34 and 36 weeks, stayed in the SCN at Northern Beaches Hospital where they received incredible care and support from all the midwives, nurses and doctors.
With a 24/7 live stream that allowed me to see Isla when we couldn’t physically be there, to heart-shaped fabrics that we regularly swapped for ‘scent bonding’ and cutting edge equipment for constant monitoring, we were so grateful for the thorough and compassionate care provided during their SCN stays.
Since being back at the SCN with Jordan last December, I realised I wanted to do something small to support this cause and help other babies and families - who probably face much more difficult circumstances than we did.
The funds will go towards medical equipment including things like Humidicribs, neonatal monitors and phototherapy systems.
