Our Premmie Marathon Challenge: Running for Bridget and for All Tiny Fighters

Our daughter Bridget’s journey into the world was anything but straightforward.

From 26 weeks of pregnancy, we travelled every week to the Gold Coast for ultrasounds to closely monitor her growth and blood flow. Each appointment, we packed our hospital bags, not knowing whether that would be the day our baby would need to arrive. Doctors explained that she would need to be delivered as soon as the risks of prematurity became less than the risks of her poor blood flow.

We were told to prepare for the unknown: that outcomes could vary, that she would likely need NICU or special care admission, and that her size would make things difficult.

Against all the uncertainty, we were incredibly fortunate to make it to 37 weeks. Bridget arrived via c-section, weighing just over 2kg. She needed a little help with breathing at first, but to everyone’s amazement she exceeded expectations. After only a few days, we were able to bring our tiny but mighty girl home.

We are so grateful for the extraordinary care and support we received along the way. We also know that many families face much harder journeys, with babies who need weeks or months in NICU fighting for their lives.

That’s why we’re taking on the Premmie Marathon Challenge — to raise vital funds to ensure premature and unwell babies get the specialised care they need, and families get the support they deserve.
