Tommy

We know firsthand just how challenging it can be to have a premature baby. After an emergency C-section at 34 weeks due to complications with my health, our little Tommy arrived weighing just 1.7kg. Although so tiny, he was perfectly healthy, scoring an APGAR of 9 — and for that, we’ll be forever grateful.

Still, it was an emotional and exhausting time. The constant sounds of monitors and machines, leaving Tommy in the nursery each night, and watching other families head home before us — all of it was heartbreaking. Tommy needed to reach 2.5kg before we could finally bring him home. During those weeks, I was exclusively pumping to provide milk for his feeding tube.

Tommy spent four and a half weeks in hospital. We spent countless hours by his crib, watching as he was fed through a nasogastric tube, attending health checks, and meeting with doctors. One of our favourite moments was “koala care”, also known as chest-to-chest cuddles, a truly special time to bond with our tiny miracle.

The incredible nurses and doctors at Ballarat Base Hospital made our journey a little easier, and we’ll always be thankful for their care and kindness.

When I saw this Marathon Challenge come up, I knew I had to get involved. It’s my way of giving back and helping support other families who find themselves in the NICU or nursery, facing those long days and nights with their beautiful, fragile babies.

If you can, please consider supporting this amazing cause. Every contribution helps families like ours, and gives tiny fighters like Tommy the best possible start in life. ?

This November I’m taking on the Premmie Marathon Challenge

I’ll be clocking up 100 kms, by walking, riding or running, in the Premmie Marathon Challenge to raise funds for life-saving neonatal equipment that will give critically ill and premature babies, just like our Tommy, a better chance of survival.

I'd love your support - if you can, please make a generous tax-deductible donation here.

Thank you for your support.
Your donation will help keep me motivated as I complete my challenge through November, knowing that each km I complete is helping save the lives of sick and premature babies.

Fancy joining me? You can sign up for the Premmie Marathon Challenge too! Simply choose your challenge distance and start clocking your kms for premmie babies.
