My premmie experience
At 34 weeks pregnant, with still two more weeks of work before maternity leave, my waters broke prematurely. I was then admitted to hospital due to birthing my first child so quick, as we were concerned he would come very quickly and I wouldn’t make it to the hospital in time for the birth. They administered steroids to develop his lungs and antibiotics to prevent infection. We managed to keep him in for one more week however regardless of the antibiotics, I developed an infection and Oliver was induced at 35 weeks. It was a quick unmediated, 40 minute delivery, thankfully as he was in distress and had his umbilical cord wrapped twice around his neck and once around his abdomen. Oliver was taken away within minutes of his arrival so that they could start intravenous antibiotics and nasogastric feeding. He was tube fed and in special care for 2 weeks before he was allowed to come home. Although this is not the postpartum experience I wanted with my son, I am thankful that he is now a strong, healthy and happy 10 month old. I would not have Oliver with me today if it wasn’t for all the amazing work of the special care unit and the equipment they have. Please donate to make sure this exceptional service continues for other families in this position. This November I’m taking on the Premmie Marathon Challenge
I’ll be clocking up my kms in the Premmie Marathon Challenge to raise funds for life-saving neonatal equipment that will give critically ill and premature babies a better chance of survival.
I'd love your support - if you can, please make a tax-deductible donation here.
Thank you for your support.
Your donation will help keep me motivated as I complete my challenge through November, knowing that each km I complete is helping save the lives of sick and premature babies.
