But why?
Being a nurse you see things, feel things and empathise. But its not until you experience something for yourself that you truly understand the journey. Suddenly the beeping and alarms of machines have a new meaning, the ventilators, endless test, needles all focusing on that person. That one person... is your little baby who was supposed to stay growing in your womb. Now the incubator is the womb. This is our story.
At 26 weeks 3 days, my waters broke. Baby Leo born at 28 weeks, 1.044kg intubated and taken straight to special care nursery. I didn't even hold him. Endless questions running through my husband and my head. Will he survive? I will never forget the day I was discharge from hospital, without Leo. It never got easier.
Looking around at the NICU (special care nursery) at all the life-saving equipment and amazing allied health team gave me the confidence to know that my little boy can and will make it.
However, looking closely at all this equipment, it was evident that all this life saving equipment was donated and purchased through fundraisers. So yes, all the doctors, nurses, allied health team saved Leo but It was also the generosity of everyone who had ever donated anything little or big towards the equipment that THEY ARE also the ones that helped save my boys life.
In the month of November Leo turns one (9 months corrected)! I
am running for Leo, I am running for all the babies that have needed this life saving equipment and I am running for the babies that will.
This November I’m taking on the Premmie Marathon Challenge
I’ll be clocking up my kms in the Premmie Marathon Challenge to raise funds for life-saving neonatal equipment that will give critically ill and premature babies a better chance of survival.
I'd love your support - if you can, please make a generous tax-deductible donation here.
Thank you for your support.
Your donation will help keep me motivated as I complete my challenge through November, knowing that each km I complete is helping save the lives of sick and premature babies.
Fancy joining me? You can sign up for the Premmie Marathon Challenge too! Simply choose your challenge distance and start clocking your kms for premmie babies.

Leo- there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think of how far you’ve come. Without the help of the NICU- I shudder to think of what could have been. I love you endlessly, a true hero in our presence. You’ll achieve great things in this lifetime. Keep shining our lucky star ⭐️
