Running for Premature Babies. Except, if you see us out there and mistake it for brisk strolling, do not worry. We are absolutely still athletes. In our hearts. And legs. Mostly hearts.

We are taking part in the Running for Premature Babies challenge in honour of our daughter, Maisie, who made her brave entrance into the world at 34 weeks after Em was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia and HELLP syndrome.

Tiny but mighty, Maisie spent three weeks in the Special Care Nursery in Bendigo and another week in Mildura, surrounded by extraordinary nurses and doctors who cared for her when we could not. Their grace, skill and gentle humour carried us through some of the longest days of our lives.

We walk for Maisie and for every family who has stood beside an incubator, whispering hope into machines and plastic walls. We walk for the parents who have had to leave the hospital without their baby, hearts breaking in the car park, knowing love alone could not bring them home yet. We remember every tear shed on the drive away, every moment that felt wrong and unfair, every ache of empty arms.

This cause is stitched into our hearts. We want more tiny fighters to have the same chance our Maisie did, and more families to be able to carry their babies home sooner, arms and hearts full.

Now, a small confession. While this noble challenge is called Running, our technique leans more toward determined walking. Think sweaty ambition meets leisurely pace. Majestic cheetah energy minus the speed. Some might call it strolling with purpose. We prefer the term elite endurance wobbling.

Every step still matters. Every dollar still changes a life. And every time we lace up our shoes, we carry Maisie and all the little warriors who fought in incubators before they ever fought on playgrounds.
